The Residences at Deer Creek is Schererville’s first senior living community and the focal point of the 11.4 acre Deer Creek Professional Park development site. Construction is underway on 2.4 acres for the 3-story, 86-private unit assisted living and memory support community. This 83,000 square foot community is designed in response to the increasing demand for supportive living services for older adults throughout the area.
“Our vision is to create the ideal environment for seniors,” explains Dr. Prakash Makam, cardiologist, and one of the physician-owners who have designed the project in direct response to what their patients and families have long asked for—services to meet their evolving quality of life needs. “As people become older,” Dr. Makam states, “their desire for independence does not change, but their care needs do. We believe we are offering a unique setting with our concept for the Residences at Deer Creek. We will meet the demand for senior living and access to the highest quality support services and amenities through the design of the facility and the convenience of the adjacent medical arts park development.”
“We wanted the best. Much thought and planning have gone into the development of our concept and we are extremely pleased with the results of our collaborative approach and the efforts of our project team,” Dr. Makam notes. “We will be able to present the Northwest Indiana’s premier facility for assisted living and memory support services, offering residential living that incorporates the latest care technologies and is intentionally designed to embody energy efficiencies. Frank Jachim, who possesses expertise as an engineer, planner and information technology specialist, serves as Project Manager along with WestShore Senior Housing Consultants who serve as the Manager/Operator. The project team also includes Van Ryn Architects and Panzica Construction. The entire development team has extensive experience in the planning, design, and construction of senior living environments. Construction is financed through Centier Bank.

The Residences at Deer Creek, because it is primarily physician-owned, offers residents the unique ability of access to the experience and expertise of local specialists in the areas of geriatrics, cardiology, oncology, neurology, internal medicine, orthopedics and others.
“Management of medical conditions is key to the health needs and optimal well-being of our patients. Our intention is to become an available resource as well as a source of comfort for our residents, their families, and the staff of our facility. We will take the idea of medical resources being ‘close to home’ to a higher level,” Dr. Makam said. “This, we find, is an important concern to seniors who remain active though they may have diabetes or a heart condition, for example, that often accompanies age. They understand the value and importance of taking charge of their health by partnering with their physician,” he added. Furthermore, “We are excited to explore new and existing technology to enhance residents’ access to health and wellness services,” notes Dr. Makam.

Private studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments enable residents to choose living options for couples, relatives or friends who may decide to share a home. The assisted living apartments provide kitchenettes with built-in counters and cabinetry that include a refrigerator and a microwave. All apartments will have spacious walk-in showers and bathrooms, designed to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs. Laundry facilities are residential grade, typical of those found in most homes. Screened-in porches are available on select units and in common areas, an amenity provided exclusively at the Residences at Deer Creek.
Residents can choose care and service packages that suit their changing needs. Professional care staff, including a nurse, will be available around the clock, seven days per week.
The dining area will feature breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by the community chef. A second dining venue, the café, offers an alternative, lighter dining venue for on the go residents. All meals are included in the monthly service fee.
A variety of amenities and social areas are located throughout the building, including an on-site salon and wellness center. The entire facility offers wireless internet access in addition to a technology center and a library.
MEMORY SUPPORT – IT’S THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT AND MORE
“We have the benefit of input from one of our affiliated physicians, Dr. Sanjeev Maniar, specialist in neurophysiology and neurology, offering updates and keeping us informed of the latest advances in caring for people who have cognitive impairment or are Alzheimer’s patients,” emphasizes Dr. Makam. "Research is constantly evaluating how a person’s diet, for example, can often affect and may even trigger memory loss,” notes Dr. Maniar. “A nutritionist can work with our chef for optimal meal and snack preparation,” he explains.
“As for the physical environment, it was important for us to ensure the design is supportive of those with mild as well as progressed cognitive impairments and memory loss,” according to Dr. Maniar. Memory Care apartments are also private and well-designed to accommodate changing needs. There are common areas and settings to evoke home-like recollections such as gathering in the kitchen. A private, enclosed courtyard will provide a beautiful and natural area outdoors. Resident-centered memory support programming is also provided, all within a secured, designated community located on the main floor.
EFFICIENCY AND TECHNOLOGY
“The design of everything in the Residences at Deer Creek is a result of listening to the needs of the community and working closely with construction teams to identify ways to deliver a modern approach to residential living,” according to Project Manager Frank Jachim. “This building will be technologically advanced,” said Jachim. “Wireless technology will enable residents to use their own or the community’s computers to stay in touch with the world through the internet or make video calls to family.” Jachim also said, “Families of residents in the secured area of the building can come and go as they please knowing that their family member’s security is provided through active monitoring of their whereabouts without the risk of wandering beyond the safety and services they need.” Various other features, including ways to enhance communications between residents and their physician through telemedicine, are also being explored.
SCHEDULED TO OPEN FOR OCCUPANCY WINTER 2012
The Residences at Deer Creek is targeted to complete construction and be prepared to accept the first residents by winter of 2012. To-date, about 42 full and part-time positions are projected for resident care and services, plant operations and administrative functions.
